Spell Weaver

Tap - tap - tap, went the old witches stick as she came out of the cave. "What do you mean it isn't working out?"

Cinderella fixed her dress that had torn in the twigs. Since she'd escaped the house of her step sisters, she'd always hated ugliness. It reminded her of the dark past she wished to fully escape. She'd almost gotten away from all that -- she was married to a king for crying out loud. Even though she no longer loved him.

"I need another spell," Cinderella said, finally, "Something to kill Philip without throwing suspicion on me."

The old witch gave the matter some consideration, and seeing no humor in Cinderella's eye wondered what had happened to the bubbly newlywed she'd seen last. "There has to be another way, dear. Can't you save the marriage? The lad's always been so charming."

“I can't divorce him," Cinderella said, stamping her foot and crushing a beetle. "I'll lose the castle and the kids. I know he's seeing someone else. People laugh at me at court -- it's worse than living with my step mother."

The old witch shook the spiders from her hair and insisted that things couldn't be as bad as all that.

"You need more confidence, dear. I know you may have a little paranoia complex after the horrible things your step mother did to you -"

"I don't have a paranoia complex," Cinderella interrupted unkindly. "Who told you I did? Was it Charming's mother? She's never liked me, I read it in her diary."

"But you've had your wishes, dear. You had your happy ending."

"But I'm not happy," Cinderella insisted. "Now are you going to help me? Or do I have to take matters into my own hands again?"

The old witch thought she'd saved Cinderella from evil. But now she saw she had spent too long under her step sisters’ spell. Lacking confidence and suffering daily mental abuse, she'd become warped and distrustful. She couldn't see the good thing she had for the certainty it could not be real.

There was no such thing as happy endings.

She should try living in a cave, the old witch thought, disliking this stranger she'd once known as happy and beautiful. The years of worry had been unkind to Cinderella. Her hair had greyed and her eyes had lost that sparkle.

King Charming deserves better than her, the old witch decided. Silly girl doesn't know when she has it good.

"Well?" Cinderella demanded. As queen, she expected people to answer her right away. No more was she second fiddle to ugly sisters. People noticed her and if they didn't; she used her royal powers to make them. Her step mother had taught her the beauty of fear. The purest of weapons.

It got the job done.

"Very well, dear," the old witch said finally. "I'm your fairy god mother and it's my duty to make you happy."

"You're damn right," Cinderella said and followed her into the magic scented cave and wrinkled her nose like she'd stepped into something unpleasant. "God.
